Workshop summary

On 30 August 2026, 14 participants met during the HSI2026 EMEA workshop to explore a possible COST Action on Human Systems Integration (HSI). The discussion considered how HSI can help shape AI-enabled systems whose outcomes depend on people, organizations, technology, and decisions made under uncertainty.

Quick findings

  • There is a clear opportunity to create a network around HSI for AI-infused critical sociotechnical systems.
  • The strongest priorities were safe Human-AI interaction, early architecting for joint cognitive systems, value analysis, advanced HSI modelling, and verification and validation.
  • Legal responsibility, training for complex systems, critical thinking, diversity and inclusion, and HSI as an engineering discipline should also inform the network.
  • The network should connect existing work across defence, transport, health, energy, and other critical domains rather than create another isolated research project.
  • Early practical outputs could include an HSI engineering workflows playbook, guidance on HSI influence on AI development, and a curated repository of use cases.

Way forward

The proposal remains open for refinement. Its immediate purpose is to build a connected community able to improve the design and use of AI-infused critical sociotechnical systems by integrating human, organizational, and technical concerns from the start.
